Lake Geneva Area Offers Many Opportunities for a Spring Adventure
Walworth County Visitors Bureau Can Help Plan Your Ideal Trip
ELKHORN, Wis. — (March 25, 2009) — If you are suffering from cabin fever and want to hit the road to a nearby destination for a change of pace, Wisconsin's Lake Geneva area is the perfect place to begin your adventure.
Even though spring weather is a bit brisk in Wisconsin, some people are yearning for the great outdoors. If you're up for a bike ride, be sure to stop at LaGrange General Store & Backyard Bike Shop at W6098 Hwy 12 in Whitewater, www.backyardbikes.com. There you'll find a quaint shop that rents and sells bicycles, skis and accessories. A detailed map of bike trails in the nearby Kettle Moraine Forest is available, and the friendly staff will answer your questions and provide additional information. If you're an avid bicyclist, ask about the group bike rides offered on Saturday mornings. If you happen to encounter a snowy day in the spring you can also swap out your bike for skis and take advantage of the cross county ski trails in the Kettle Moraine Forest. Be sure to plan a trip to Backyard Bike Shop when you have an appetite and can enjoy their delicious variety of healthy, homemade sandwiches. You can eat there or take a boxed lunch with you on your journey.
If you're still game for outdoor activities and you love to catch a lot of fish, then Rushing Waters Fisheries, located at N301 Hwy H in Palmyra (www.rushingwaters.net) is a must stop. There you will find 50 trout ponds stocked generously with fish. You pay only for the fish you catch, pole rental and bait. You can then have your fish cleaned and filleted to order for a minimal charge. If you're hungry for fish on the spot, you can cook your catch on the grills located on the grounds.
The Lake Geneva Cruise Line will provide you with a great outdoor experience right on the water, a must for a trip to the Lake Geneva area. It is located at 812 Wrigley Drive, Lake Geneva, www.cruiselakegeneva.com. If you visit between June 15 and September 15, you can ride on the boat that delivers mail around the lake on a daily basis. Watch as the agile mail delivery person delivers and retrieves mail by jumping onto the pier and then back into the boat again without the boat ever stopping!
If you love the shore and would like to stretch your legs with a brisk walk along the lake – and enjoy a close-up view of historic mansions – there is a 21-mile shore path around Geneva Lake.
Or sit back and enjoy a scenic tour of the area on Wisconsin's last original electric train line. The dinner train offers a unique dining experience. The East Troy Electric Railroad Museum, located at 2002 Church Street (www.easttroyrr.org), has a wealth of information for train enthusiasts.
You won't have to travel very far to experience the best pies in the U.S. There are two restaurants in the area that can lay claim to this title. The Lake Geneva Pie Company, located at 150 E. Geneva Square (www.lgpie.com), won top awards for their apple and blueberry pies. The Elegant Farmer's specialty, Apple Pie Baked In A Paper Bag®, was named best pie in America by both the Wall Street Journal and Gourmet magazine and featured on The Food Network. The Elegant Farmer is located at 1545 Main Street in Mukwonago (www.elegantfarmer.com).
If an indoor adventure is more to your liking, you can have fun exploring the goodies, both old and new, housed in the sprawling Fuzzy Pig – which, by the way, is named in honor of a fat cat. Meander through the rambling old dairy barn that is now an antique store and boutique rolled into one. An adjacent refurbished farm building houses several restaurant venues, including an ice cream parlor and sandwich shop right out of the 50s, complete with a juke box. The Fuzzy Pig is located at N8660 Clover Valley Road, in Whitewater, www.thefuzzypig.com.
For theatre buffs, the Fireside Dinner Theatre, located at 1131 Janesville Ave., Fort Atkinson, www.firesidetheatre.com, will fill your hunger for theatre as well as your hunger for dinner with professional national talent and an award-winning restaurant.
The Irvin L. Young Auditorium presents a variety of theatrical experiences – from Broadway musicals to the symphony orchestra. It is located on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus at 930 West Main Street, www.uww.edu/youngauditorium.
