The C.A.R.E. Center Raises Money for Child Abuse Victims
Funds to Further Program to Protect Children
Waukesha, Wis. – May 13, 2010 – The C.A.R.E. Center, a program of Family Service of Waukesha County, hosted its first open house fundraiser event in April for Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. The Center’s main focus is to assist child abuse victims through the investigation process with forensic interviews, medical exams, and family advocacy. The guests, including local doctors, lawyers, law enforcement, and dignitaries, toured the facility to learn more about how The C.A.R.E. Center is helping abused children. The event raised over $7,000 for the program.
Also at the event, Waukesha County District Attorney, Brad Schimel, in speaking to the group emphasized the importance of the program to the community, “The C.A.R.E. Center is one of the most important tools that the Child Protection System has to keep kids safe and bring justice to those who abuse and neglect kids. Even more importantly, the team at The C.A.R.E. Center plays a critical role in the healing process for child victims and their families.”
The C.A.R.E. Center, located in the Big Yellow House, is committed to protecting child abuse victims and making the abuse investigation and prosecution processes less traumatic for them. The Center provides a dedicated forensic interviewer to each case, assists investigators in gathering sensitive information, and guides families through the investigative process.
To make child abuse investigations as painless as possible for children, interviews are digitally recorded to help gather evidence, minimizing the amount of trauma children experience from multiple interviews and in-court testimony. Also, the children’s medical exams are performed at The C.A.R.E. Center by medical staff from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

The collaborative partners include: Family Service of Waukesha County, the Child Protection Center of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, The Women's Center, Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services, ProHealth Care, Children's Service Society of Wisconsin, the Waukesha County District Attorney's Office and local law enforcement.
